(June 26, 2016) Two undisputed masters of art, Antonio Canova and Mimmo Jodice ‘find’ each other in Mexico City in an exhibition organised by the Italian Cultural Institute. It aims to challenge and to pose a dialogue between the different but complementary techniques: sculpture and photography. An artistic genius who lived at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, renowned in the Italian and international photography landscape and mythological figures such as Venus, Cupid and Psyche, Hebe and Callipoe and also historical figures such as Napoleone Bonaparte. Immortal pieces that have come out of Canova’s chisel and captured on Jodice’s film. The exhibition will open on July 6 at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos and will remain open until October 2. It is titled “Beauty and Sensuality: Antonio Canova and Mimmo Jodice”. It was aimed at illustrating the great neoclassical sculptor, Canova (Possagno 1757-Venice 1822) through his graphic pieces, in particular. Precious pieces of paper with naked female figures and compositional studies that illustrate the fundamental conceptual phase of his sculpture. The fame that Canova has amounted over the centuries is illustrated by the 19th century prints that reproduce his most significant and famous pieces. Mimmo Jodice (Born in Naples 1934) presents a selection of shots from his photographic repertoire of photographs of Canova’s pieces in major museums of the world. He interprets the form, light, shadows, poetry, and charm in an extraordinary contemporary interpretation. Astonishing shots, unexpected glimpses, and revealed details that bring to life and give the public a gleaming elegance that has always been a distinguishing element in the Venetian sculptor’s figures.
