(28 June 2016) In summer 2011 Matteo Di Giovanni went to Bosnia and Herzegovina to work on a photography project that will allow him to conclude his master’s in journalism from the University of Westminster in London, but suffers a serious accident which almost costs him his life. In October, he unexpectedly wakes from a coma during which he has undergone several surgeries and a transfemoral amputation of a leg, but begins to live, and picks up the camera. This is how the project “Reaching the Cape” was born. He will travel from Milan to the North Cape and back between October and December 2015. It is a journey through different climates and regions, an adventure on the read that Matteo has wanted to take for some time and that he is now able to do thanks to new highly innovative implants. At present the project is now New Old Camera a shop in the heart of Milan founded by Ryuichi Watanabe. It has been the the landmark of Italian photography collectors, amateurs and professionals for the past 30 years. Tomorrow at 19:00 at Micamera (Via Medardo Rosso 19) Matteo will meet guests, sponsors and supporters from the crowdfunding campaign launched in September 2015 on Kickstarter which has gathered 300 people who have made this photographic journey possible. The event was organised in collaboration with the Conservatory of Photography and Farnheit Studios. The evening will also be an opportunity for Matteo to thank those who have supported him by distributing original prints from his journey and other rewards. In addition, all guests can have the chance to meet Matteo and hear about his experience and see a preview of pictures taken during his trip and purchase specially priced prints. They will also have the possibility to contribute towards the realisation of the exhibition catalogue of “Reaching the Cape”, two important milestones for the author’s professional return. (Red)
