(July 11, 2016) 2016 ‘Viva Rossini’ reaches its third season thanks to the collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney and the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival taking place in Pesaro from August 8 to August 20. The Rossini Opera Festival has contributed with increasing success, since 1980, to the diffusion of this Italian composer’s operas with a particular focus on those less known and performed, such as for example, ‘Il Signor Bruschino’ (‘Signor Bruschino or The Accidental Son’). This work will be screened next July 15 at the ICI and presented by the countertenor and musical composition graduate, David Schwartz. Schwartz is currently a lecturer in musical theatre at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney (Nida) and a cabaret critic on the Cabaret Hotline Online and surtitling operator at the Australia Opera. ‘Il Signor Bruschino’ is an operatic farse in one act, whose libretto was written by Giuseppe Maria Foppa and draws from the comedy ‘Le fils par hasard’ (1808) by Alissan de Chazet and Maurice Ourry. The Opera pertains to a group of five operatic farces that Rossini composed for the San Moisè Theatre in Venice where it premiered January 27, 1813. A classic comedy with mistakes, mistaken identities, family squabbles, contentious young ladies culminating in final clarification and an inevitable happy ending. (Red)
