(August 23, 2016) Among the many pilgrims and travelers from all over the world that are setting out to reach Santiago de Compostela, now there is also a group of activists from Parent Project Onlus, the association of parents of children and boys with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. Looking for September 7, World Duchenne Awareness Day, four very special pilgrims will travel, some on foot, some by bike, the Way, to raise funds for scientific research and to spread awareness about this serious rare genetic disease that manifests itself in childhood. The common challenge of the participants of “On the Way to stop Duchenne” is to help support an annuity of the scholarship of the young researcher Luke Tucciarone, active in the research group directed by Prof. Pier Lorenzo Puri at Fondazione Santa Lucia in Rome. The goal is to collect 15,000 Euros: everyone can contribute to the fundraising symbolically “donating” a step or a ride through their contribution. This is the aim of Nicoletta Madia – Head of Fundraising and communications – that will travel on foot over 100 km on the Portuguese Way, starting from Tuy and reaching Santiago on August 28, to symbolically pass the baton to her fellow adventurers. Paul Sassu, Pier Luca Longo and Roger Cervo, three friends, chose, however, to fully follow the French Route from September 1. They will travel about 750 km riding their mountain bikes, crossing Spain. (Red)
