(1 September 2016) Half a century after the famous “Letter on judges”, Alfio Russo introduces the thought and work of Don Milani at the Italian Cultural Institute of Cairo. The event will be held on Thursday, September 15 (19:00) in the ICI Theatre. Born in 1923, from cultured Jewish family and baptized during racial persecution, in 1943 Lorenzo Milani entered the seminary in Florence. Ordained a priest in 1947, he was an assistant chaplain in San Donato di Calenzano until 1954, where he opened a school. He then moved to Barbiana, in the centre of the Mugello where the population was dwindling, he became prior and devoted himself to teaching boys in the country until his death. Among his writings are: “Pastoral experiences” (1958, withdrawn because it was considered “not appropriate” by the Holy Office); “Obedience is no longer a virtue” (1967, in which he collects an open letter in defense of conscientious objection to military service, and a letter the judge of his trail as a result of his first letter); “Letter to a Professor” (1967, edited in collaboration with the students of the Barbiana school); and “Letters” (posthumous, 1970).
