Bern. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni held a telephone conference with the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs, Didier Burkhalter. The Swiss Minister confirmed that yesterday’s referendum in the Ticino Canton would not have any immediate consequences on Italian cross-border workers and that legislation on foreign workers is currently under scrutiny by the National Parliament. Gentiloni has reiterated that every act of discrimination towards Italian cross-border works would be an impediment to agreement between the EU and Switzerland. A note published by the Farnesina states, “Italy is committed to this agreement which must be based on common economic interests and the common recognition of the principle of people’s free movement”.
