Kirov. “As president of this Region, I feel the responsibility to demand that the government takes on every necessary means to bring the Italian public up to speed with the outcomes of the first excavations in Kirov in the hopes that they may lead to the possibility of Italians to at least know the burial site of their loved ones. This is a request that I consider to be especially important to Friuli Venezia Giulia as the ‘Sacrario di Cargnacco’ where the remains of Italian soldiers who fell in Russia are buried.” This statement was written by the President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Debora Serracchini to the Minister of Defence, Roberta Pinotti, regarding the recent news on the discovery of a mass grave near Kirov, Russia that may possibly contain the remains of many Italian, German and Hungarian soldiers killed or missing between December 1942 and January 1943 after the break of the front on the Don.
