(25 October, 2016) American artist and teacher Joe Blaustein was in Florence at the time the Arno river overflowed on November 4, 1966 and flooded the city. He decided to document the event with his camera but those shots remained in a box for many years. It was many years later that those photographs were donated to the city’s archives and restored and will soon be on display in New York for “The Flood” exhibition starting October 28. Alongside Blaustein’s shots will be photographs of another flood in New York the one caused by hurricane Sandy in 2012 that hit the south of the city the most. The latter belong to Massimo Berruti, shot in black and white. The dialogue between the two artists allows for the possibility to compare the culture of the United States and of Italy (the American photographer who photographs Florence and the Italian photographer who photographs New York) with a playful temporal switch of techniques (colour photos for the event that occurred 50 years ago and black and white for the most recent event that occurred in 2012). The exhibition is open until November 23. (Red)
