(November 17, 2016) The research and training centre of the University of Milano-Bicocca in the Maldives are working towards purifying sea water and making it drinkable for the inhabitants of the island of Magoodhoo and the MaRHE Center. The objective is to install a water desalination plant in Magoodhoo, in the Faafu atoll. The project was recently presented at the Italian Pavillion in Marrakech (Morocco), as part of COP 22, the International Conference on climate. The project stems from the cooperation between the University of Milano-Bicocca, the Italian government and the Maldivian government. The entire work plan has been discussed and shared with the inhabitants of the island of Magoodhoo. The desalination plant will provide clean water to the island’s population who currently do not have drinkable water and the MaRHE Center, and will significantly improve hygiene and safety in the preparation of food and drink and will make a positive impact on people’s health. They will be less exposed to diseases linked to contaminated water. The plant will also make Magoodhoo’s water supply will be independent from the other islands which will improve the water quality used in the preparation of mortars for the construction of buildings. With regards to the research Bicocca research centre, the use of drinking water will optimize the performance of laboratory equipment and other equipment that require water for their operation, such as washing machines and boilers, currently subject to increased wear.
