Paris. The Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage met in Addis Ababa in recent days and has approved the expansion of the multinational element “Falconry, a living human heritage”, with the inscription of Italian art of falconry on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The important UNESCO award confirms the cultural value of the ancient art of training birds of prey in practice since the Middle Ages. It has had a strong presence in Medieval iconography and a valuable record in the De arte venandi cum avibus of Frederick II of Swabia and has culminated in the Renaissance courts with protagonists such as the Sforza and Gonzaga.
