Washington – A new quasicrystal, from outer space, surprising scientists with a chemical composition up to now never foreseen. It is told in the new issue of the Scientific Reports magazine the study of an international group of researchers which Luca Bindi, of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence ( “Collisions in outer space produced an icosahedral phase in the meteorite never Khatyrka Observed previously in the laboratory “) is part of. The new extraterrestrial mineral is the third identified as of today, and has been produced by collisions of asteroids in space at the dawn of the solar system. Its discovery shows that these materials could be much more common than scientists thought. (9Colonne)
