London – Earthquakes, given the vast destructive effects they bring with them, are one of the areas in which geology is able to provide valuable assistance: to better understand the mechanisms of their generation can mean developing more effective future prevention tools. So far, the seismic events were interpreted as generated by a unique mechanism, due to the release of elastic energy accumulated over the centuries. A study coordinated by geologist Carlo Doglioni of La Sapienza shows that the energy released by earthquakes is different depending on the geological environment in which they occur and that this difference produces specific effects. The study was published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports. (9Colonne)
