London – Sergio Oddi, Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Teramo, is co-author of a research paper recently published on Nature Communications, one of the most important international scientific journals in the field of Multidisciplinary Science. The work shows, for the first time, the presence in the brain of the ion channel TRPV1, the receptor of endovanilloids and capsaicin, the spicy pepper principle. In particular, the study clarifies that in some brain regions and in some subtypes specializing in the immune response, this receptor plays an important role in the control of neuroinflammatory response and neuropathic pain, paving the way for new therapeutic approaches to diseases associated to an inflammatory component of the brain, such as Alzheimer’s syndrome and multiple sclerosis. The research is the result of Sergio Oddi’s close collaboration with the Santa Lucia Foundation and the European Brain Research Institute – Rita Levi Montalcini Foundation in Rome. (9colonne)
