(23 August 2017) The exhibition “From Hiroshima to Turin, passing through Nagoya” by Japanese artist Sakurai Shinya was inaugurated at Shimin Gallery Yata in Nagoya. Born in Hiroshima in 1981, Shinya graduated from Osaka University of Art and subsequently graduated from the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, a city where he currently lives and works. He has participated in several collective and personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His art reverts to, with extreme liberty, the colour and symbolism of pop art and the “historical” Japanese Gutai Group, but at the same time maintains a strong connection to Japanese traditional culture, for which he uses the shibori technique that was used in the Edo era (1603-1868) to dye the fabrics. The moral tension that carries a message of love and agreement between human beings and the cultures they express is always with him. It is a message that is reinforced by the persistent memory of the tragedy of Hiroshima, his hometown.
