(Jul. 26) – While waiting for sport challenges, the organization of the London Olympic Games (LOCOG) scored a first positive result by setting the target for recycling, reusing or composting 70% of waste products from the event. An ambitious goal, never achieved by any major sporting event in the world, which summarizes the main objective of the organization: leave an important legacy at the end of the Olympic Games, both in terms of know-how and good practice in the UK environmental sustainability. To accomplish this result, the committee will also rely on Novamont, Italian company leader in the production of bioplastics. The Mater-Bi – the family of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics produced by Novamont – was selected as one of the LOGOC reference materials for food packaging and catering thanks to its characteristics, which represent a real added value in the case of products contaminated with food waste, and so hardly recyclable. All the dishes and glasses of the Olympic Games in London will be made of Mater-Bi. Even McDonald’s, present with the largest restaurant in the world in the Olympic Park, will provide its customers glasses, cutlery, straws, lids and containers certified under the standards EN13432 standards and made of Mater-Bi.
