Jan. 17 – Kenya started a few days ago “Chakama in the heart,” a special volunteer program within Karibu Chakama project. The event is supported by the Milanese Karibu non-profit association and has as its main objective to help the Kenyan village of Chakama (50 km from Malindi) achieve food and economic self-sufficiency. “Chakama in the heart” also aims to create a group of people who work together in the implementation and management of all Karibu Onlus projects. You can join the project as a supporter with a donation or a school adoption, as well as a volunteer, providing assistance from your country of residence or directly in Africa. “Chakama could become a large farm – says Fabrizio Popi, president of the Karibu Fund – with crops and animals, with a clinic, schools and an orphanage. There will be a church and a great gathering place for the community. We will initiate free training camps to give the opportunity to children to learn how to breed the cows and milk them, to manage hens and rabbits, to plant vegetables, construct buildings and improve water structures.” The Karibu Chakama Project is funded by the Karibu non-profit organization in partnership with the Coast Development Authority (the institution responsible for Kenya’s poorest areas of the coastal zone development). It started in 2008 in Chakama (Kibora) to help the local community achieve economic food, education, and business independence. To date, a nursery, a carpenter store and a tailor shop have been set up, a water pipeline supplying water to the whole area was built, and the village was connected to the electricity grid. The project also includes the construction of a primary school and an emergency room, the creation of two fishing points for the fish farm, and a farm for animal breeding, aloe vera cultivation, as well as fruit and vegetables in twenty acres provided by the community. Karibu Onlus, in addition to Karibu Chakama Project, also develops other micro projects for young Africans.
