Apr. 16 – The Koboko district, a borderland just like Trentino, is located in the north of Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. For years Acav Trentino has been active in the region; the NGO has set up an important agricultural school and brought drinking water to remote villages. Now, Acav is developing interesting paths of dialogue and cooperation at the communities and local government level, an important activity, given that the populations in question are similar in language and culture (of Kakwa origins) but live in an area divided since colonial times where the tensions produced by the ongoing conflicts in different countries are stronger. James Baba, Uganda’s minister of internal affairs, described as “extraordinary” Acav’s work done in the district of Koboko: “It is an example of collaboration between an NGO and a local government that has no equal in Uganda and has aroused the interest of all delegations that have visited this area,” he added, with particular emphasis on the contribution of the Jabara agricultural school, which opened in August 2010, to the growth of local agriculture, especially with regard to the production of Kassava, pineapple and mango. Regarding drinking water supply, the digging of new wells and the rehabilitation of existing ones now covers 75% of daily needs (up from 39%).
