(Apr. 3) – Solidarity revolution means to break all ties with the dependence generated from humanitarian aid and put local populations in the condition to walk with their legs. This is the base for a project started by the Autonomous Province of Trento a couple of years ago. It aims to train African doctors in order to operate independently, taking care of specific diseases such as hydrocephalus, with to a low external input and a very modest use of financial resources. Four countries involved so far: Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya. In recent days, the head of training, the neurosurgeon Michele Conti, was in Ethiopia, at the Wolisso Hospital, to verify the results of last training courses, which took place about 15 months ago, and then to Kenya, to Camillian Tabaka Hospital, where he held a training course from scratch, involving 6 local doctors. The hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain, is a disease that affects infants because of infections contracted from the mother during pregnancy, and can be fatal or irreparably impair a child’s health, particularly his cognitive functions . It’s possible to cure, even in Africa, with half an hour surgery, and is relatively inexpensive, especially if you buy the healthcare tools in countries like India. (Roc/Peg)
