Apr. 18 – After Guido Tonelli, who held office until the end of 2011, another Italian physicist, Tiziano Camporesi was elected International Coordinator of the experiment CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), one of the four big experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN in Geneva (Atlas and CMS are the experimental programs that identified the Higgs boson). Camporesi, who has been vice-coordinator since 2012, will take office in January 2014 replacing the current spokesperson, the American Joe Incandela. “I wish to congratulate Tiziano both personally and on behalf of the INFN for the important recognition that this appointment is – said the vice president of the INFN Antonio Masiero – It’s a position of great responsibility in an important and delicate phase of work at the CMS; and his election is an important recognition for Italian physics in this field as it takes place at the CERN, the laboratory for cutting-edge research in high energy physics.”
