Apr. 24 – On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi (10 October 1813), the Teatro Regio in Turin organized a Verdi European tour of Verdi, honoring his ability to describe the spirit of the Italian Risorgimento. Sunday evening, once the Turin performances will reach an end, the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris will put on stage “Don Carlo”, Verdi’s most complex and monumental work, in the four-act version developed by the author in 1884. Maestro Gianandrea Noseda will direct the orchestra and the Regio chorus. The Mexican Ramón Vargas, tenor, performs in the difficult role of Don Carlo; at his side, as Elizabeth, there is Barbara Frittoli, soprano who over the years has emerged as a great interpreter of Verdi’s heroines of his mature works. Philip II will be played by Ildar Abdrazakov, Russian bass specializing in the Italian repertoire; the role of Rodrigo goes to baritone Ludovic Tézier; the mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona plays Princess Eboli; and the bass Marco Spotti will be the Grand Inquisitor. Claudio Fenoglio will be Chorus Master. In addition, also on Saturday, the Italian Institute of Culture in Paris, will present “Turin: Ville de culture” at 6pm. The Italian Ambassador, Giandomenico Magliano, the Mayor of Torino, Piero Fassino, and the director of the Institute, Marina Valensise, will attend. Gianandrea Noseda will speak on “The actuality of Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo.” The concert will be broadcast on May 11, at 19, by Radio France Musique and will be available from 11 May for 30 days in free streaming on the website of Radio France.
