May 14 – “Chakama in the heart” is a special program for charity and volunteer work supported by the non-profit organization Karibu, founded by Popi Fabrizio together with the Karibu Chakama Project. The program aims to help the Kenyan village of Chakama (40 km from Malindi) achieve food self-sufficiency for economic, educational and commercial use. The program “Chakama in the heart” involves an eponymous large farm, in which it is possible to cultivate fields and bread animals. The village is already connected to the electricity and water grids, it now hosts a day-care center and grows aloe vera. Still, many facilities are to be constructed or repaired, and many projects are yet to be realized. Popi Fabrizio (brother of Maurizio Fabrizio, a musician and composer of hundreds of Italian songs), in his capacity as Artistic Director for Polygram (now Universal Music) before and for BMG (now Sony Music) later, discovered and launched artists such as Georgia, Biagio Antonacci and many others. In 2008, he moved permanently in Kenya (including Chakama, Malindi and Nairobi): “In Kenya I learned what freedom, patience, respect, love and democracy truly mean – Popi explains – I saw our facilities grow, the children go to school, the work in the fields double… I discovered a beautiful, loving and caring segment of Italian youth volunteering there.”
