May 22 – Franco Azzinari exhibits his work at the Boston City Hall. Until June 28, it will be possible to admire his creations in an exhibition entitled “Looking for Hemingway,” which presents a series of paintings that take Calabria’s misery and relate it to Havana’s, in San Francisco de Paula, where Hemingway lived. The exhibition will later be held in Philadelphia and Virginia. Azzinari is one of the few living artists included in the events of the Year of Italian culture in the United States. In 1992, during a trip to Cuba, he found in the characters and rural areas of the island the colors of his homeland – Calabria. For Azzinari, this marks the beginning of a fructuous relationship with the Caribbean island: he portrays Gregorio Fuentes, Hemingway’s sailor, Fidel Castro, the musician Compay Segundo, still life painting and the sunny Cuban countryside. In 2001, the “Franco Azzinari – Cuba” project took off thanks to an exhibition at the National Museum of Havana. Azzinari, more and more fascinated by the life of Ernest Hemingway, later followed the footsteps of the writer by painting the places and people he loved in Cuba, Kenya and Tanzania.
