(July 18) As the construction of the first classrooms begins, the New Schools AMREF Project in Magarini, Kenya, kicks off. By the end of the year, a series of educational, sanitation and water infrastructures are expected to be completed; these structures are essential for life, development and the future of school-age children. The project is supported by Future Time, partner of ESET NOD32, one of the world’s largest software producers for digital security. The district of Magarini is one of Kenya’s rural areas, with little access to clean water. Due to the inadequacy or absence of sanitation and education infrastructures, diseases and infections are quite spread and consequently affect child development; this in turn affects school absenteeism rates, despite the free and compulsory primary education, sanctioned in 2003 by the local government. The situation is even more alarming when considering the average age of the population in Kenya, 18 years old, with 43% of the population under the age of 15 years. “AMREF is very pleased to have taken this very concrete path with Future Time in the heart of Africa, for the benefit of hundreds of children, who will become valuable human capital for the continent’s development,” said Sara Proietti from AMREF Italy Onlus. “Choosing how you want to try to improve someone’s life – adds Luca Sambucci, Operations Manager of Future Time – is never easy. We preferred to invest in these children’s education, because it will give them more chance to stand out and get away from the poverty in which they were born. We believe that Africa needs an educated citizenry, informed and able to break free and establish themselves as a self-sufficient continent.”
