Feb. 11 – Tomorrow the European parliament will discuss one of Italy’s flagship products and beacon of the Mediterranean diet: olive oil. At 6pm in Brussels, the Unaprol – Consortium will present the Italian extra virgin olive oil controlled facilities. The event is part of the initiatives for the enhancement of quality and traceability of European products. The meeting was organized by MEP Elisabetta Gardini (PPE) in collaboration with the Italian Olive Oil Consortium; the Director General of Unaprol, Pietro Sandali, the president of the Italian League for the Fight against Cancer (LILT), Francesco Schittulli, as well as members of EU institutions and the academic world will attend. “The olive tree – explains Unaprol – is an inseparable element of the landscape of the Mediterranean, and is an irreplaceable source of income and wealth. It is estimated that olives procure a livelihood for millions of families in rural areas. Many consumers consider extra virgin olive oil just a seasoning, but increasingly frequent discoveries are made in laboratories and universities around the world explaining the product’s great therapeutic properties. It prevents certain types of cancer, it helps the body fight heart disease and smoothens the aging process.”
