Apr. 3 – Respect for the environment is and always will be one of the most important parameters with which to assess the automotive industry. Even for those details such as lighting systems. The Official Journal of the European Union announced the decision of the European Commission to include as part of its “Eco –innovation,” the anti-glare LED lighting module “E- Light” put forth by Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting, the Magneti Marelli company dedicated lighting in the automotive sector. The technology was officially recognized as an innovative and effective way to cutting CO2 emissions from cars, a target set by European legislation. “E- Light” ensures energy savings, allowing car manufacturers to obtain a credit of 1g CO2/km for each vehicle that adopts this solution in its headlights. This in turn ensures that car manufacturers can save millions in EU sanctions for overpassing the set CO2 limits. EU legislation has established that CO2 emissions need to be cut to 95g CO2/km in 2020, from a starting basis of 130 g CO2/km in 2015. There will be a penalty for each gram exceeding the limit. Since 2012, if average CO2 emissions of a manufacturer’s fleet exceed the limit imposed, the car maker is obliged to pay compensation for excess emissions for each registered vehicle. The penalty amounts to €5 for the first g/km in excess, € 15 for the second g/km, € 25 for the third g/km, up to € 95 for each subsequent g/km. From 2019, the cost of the penalty will be €95 for the first g/km in excess. “The European Commission’s decision is very important to us – said Eugene Razelli , CEO of Magneti Marelli – because it confirms the effectiveness of advanced LED lighting technology proposed by our Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting under the regulatory framework to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles by 2020.”
