July 22 – Winner of the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Actor, the 1950s were Marcello Mastroianni’s decade. His performances in “La Dolce Vita”, “8 ½,” “Matrimonio all’Italiana”, “I Soliti Ignoti” and “Ieri, oggi e domani” – just to name a few of his most successful films – made Mastroianni one of the “superstars” of international cinema. His charm knows no boundaries and he is now in Hong Kong, which August 16-26 will host a film festival dedicated to him entitled “Marcello Mastroianni: The Great Lover.” Seven movies will be screened at the Hong Kong Arts Centre and the Hong Kong Science Museum, from “Il Bell’Antonio” to “Sostiene Pereira,” a film in which he abandoned his role as “lover” to assume the role of a journalist living in Lisbon under Salazar.
