Beijing – An international agreement marks the birth of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in China, to which Italy participates with the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). JUNO also sees the collaboration of the Czech Republic, France, Finland, Germany, Russia and the United States. Hundreds of scientists from around the world gathered at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing, to give birth to an international collaboration for the construction of a gigantic underground neutrino detector that uses a liquid scintillator, which exploits a technology similar to that used in the Borexino experiment at the National Laboratories of Gran Sasso. The new experiment will study neutrino oscillations. Specifically, JUNO will investigate the “hierarchy of neutrino mass”, or the order in which the masses of the three types of neutrinos are arranged. (9Colonne)
