Juba – The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, signed a new agreement to cease the hostilities that have shaken the country since last December. So far, the conflict in South Sudan has displaced more than 1.5 million people, with more than 1.1 million people living in makeshift shelters with little or no access to humanitarian assistance. On top of this, about 3.5 million South Sudanese are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, and 2.4 million people in the country are at risk of food insecurity, while 1.1 million are living in a food emergency situation. Taking stock of this reality, the Italian Directorate General for Development Cooperation has approved an emergency grant of €1 million to UNICEF in support of its health care and nutrition activities for those affected by the humanitarian crisis, with particular attention to children and women.
