Bangui – The deployment of the Italian contingent active within the European Union military mission in the Central African Republic, stationed in Bangui, was successfully completed. During the past week, about 50 soldiers were integrated into the EU multinational force that has been operating in the capital of the African country since last June 15. The aim of the mission is to establish a safe environment in which to carry out humanitarian assistance to the civilian population threatened by violent internal conflicts between factions. The internal conflict erupted at the end of 2013, causing thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 1.3 million people. In response to the crisis, the European Union has put in place a policy, military and humanitarian assistance initiative. The military in Bangui currently consists of about 750 soldiers from different countries, and also includes members of the police force. (9Colonne)
