Manila – The University of Milan and the IRRI, the International Agency for Research on Rice based in the Philippines, recently signed an important agreement. A non-profit public institution, the IRRI is responsible in Asia for everything that concerns the production of rice. The Agency holds the international patent PocketLai, a software that measure the leaf area index (LAI, Leaf Area Index), an important variable for studies on the interaction between the atmosphere and vegetation, agri-environment and forestry. PoketLai, developed to be used via smartphone or tablet, allows the measurement of LAI directly with the mobile phone, thus providing an alternative to the tools currently in use that are typically bulky and expensive.
