Erbil – A delegation of the Italian Episcopal Conference – led by the Secretary-General, Mons. Nunzio Galantino – visited last week the refugee camps in Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan. The local bishops had asked to start a collaboration with longer maturities, and so the Caritas brought to the table a series of concrete proposals on which families, parishes and dioceses will be asked to debate and converge. The “Family Project” involves the creation of partnerships with refugee families, designed to ensure a decent stipend for family counting more than 5. The commitment may last for a month (€140), a quarter (€420), a semester (€840), or a year (€1,680). The “House Project” instead focuses on the purchase of 150 containers for housing. In this case, the cost is of €3,140 per unit. The third initiative, named “School Project”, involves the purchase of 6 buses to bring children to 8 schools in Erbil and Dahuk; each bus costs €40,720.
