Jan. 4 – America mourns the late Italian-American Mario Cuomo, Democratic governor of the State of New York, elected three times, who recently passed away at the age of 82. “New York has lost a giant, a man of unwavering principle that had a compassion for humanity without equal,” commented on Twitter the current mayor of New York, the Italian-American Bill De Blasio. Even the POTUS praised the former Governor: “He was a determined champion of progressive values, a firm voice for tolerance and fairness.” The National Italian American Foundation also pays tribute to the politician, commenting thus: “we are deeply saddened by the disappearance of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, he was larger-than-Life, especially for Italian Americans. Mario and Matilda Cuomo are leaders who maintained their Italian identity at the forefront, and have always served this community in a real way. Cuomo inspired great pride in many Italian-Americans. He was an intellectual, a highly respected lawyer and, above all, a talented orator.”
