Feb. 16 – “The essence of mathematics is its freedom,” used to say the famous mathematician Georg Cantor to describe the charm of the discipline. A discipline in which Gabor Korchmaros, professor at the University of Basilicata (Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics), is currently one of the leading figures in the world. To confirm this, the Hungarian University of Szeged has awarded him the title of Doctor Honoris Causa for Korchmaros’ “internationally recognized research excellence in the field of mathematics.” The recognition followed a proposal from the “J. Bolyai INTÉZET” Department of Mathematics of the University, motivated by the long and fruitful collaboration between the two departments. Korchmaros has been Professor of Geometry at the University of Basilicata since 1987. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious ICA “Euler Medal” (Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications, Canada). Korchmaros has had many students, both in Italy and abroad, including now professors Arrigo Bonisoli (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) and Antonio Cossidente (University of Basilicata), both winners of the ICA “Hall Medal” when they were associate professors at the University of Basilicata. Korchmaros is also the creator, along with Angelo Sonnino and Luca Giuzzi, of a mathematical algorithm for computer security patented by Seleta.
