September 29th, 2015 – The first official science and teaching mission to Nepal of the multidisciplinary team of experts from Padua, coordinated by Professor Giovanni Stellin – director of the pediatric cardiac surgery and congenital heart disease operative unit complex at the University of Padua, and director of the School of Cardiac Surgery – has just come to an end. The team developed a theoretical training and in field program to study congenital heart diseases in a developing country with limited resources in the health sector. The training covered theoretical and practical lessons on the correction of simple and complex cardiac diseases, on minimally invasive techniques and approaches to correct simple cardiac diseases, on the correction of congenital heart diseases in adult patients, on perfusion and extracorporeal circulation and postoperative management of patients with congenital heart diseases. After a 3-year period of specialized clinical training at the Padua unit, Dr. Anil Bhattarai is starting a program for the correction of congenital heart disease in Kathmandu, Nepal. The cooperation agreements between the University of Padua and Pokhara University allow the Padua experts to provide their valuable technical assistance during surgical correction. (Red)
