October 27th, 2015 – What is the “state” of contemporary Italian fiction? Mauro Covacich will try to answer this question during a conference scheduled for tomorrow (at 6pm) at the Italian Institute of Culture in Ljubljana, (Breg 12). The meeting – titled “A good start …” – was organized by the IIC in collaboration with the Department of Arts in Ljubljana (Translation Unit) on the occasion of the 15th edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, an annual event for the promotion of Italian language abroad. Covacich will discuss the incipit of novels, or those crucial opening words of a text that set the tone for the entire book. “In collaboration with the Bellonci Foundation, which organizes each year the Strega literary prize, the students of the Department of Translation of the University of Ljubljana will present their translations of the opening words of the works selected for the final round of the Strega 2015 – explains the Italian Cultural Institute in Ljubljana – will be an opportunity to speak once again of the relationship between language, culture, and identity. Thanks to Mauro Covacich, whose collection of short stories La Sposa (Bompiani, 2015) has been listed among the five finalists of this year’s Strega Prize, the participants will try to describe the ‘state’ of Italian contemporary fiction.” Mauro Covacich (Trieste, born in 1965) is the author of several novels, all published by Einaudi. The Slovene translation is currently available for “Trieste sottosopra”, published in Italy by Laterza. (Red)
