December 1st, 2015 – The crossing from Cuba to Florida, over 180 kilometers long, is Salvatore Cimmino’s newest challenge. The amputee continues his awareness campaign on the rights of disabled people and the need to take concrete action to rid the world of architectural barriers through reforms that allow disable people to access the most advanced technologies. The latest adventure is part of a swimming world tour that Salvatore Cimmino began over a decade ago, becoming the spokesperson for “Swimming in seas around the world, for a world without barriers and borders”. For the event, the Biorobotics Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa recently hosted the first meeting on the major scientific and logistical challenges in view of this crossing, scheduled for summer 2016. The meeting was promoted by bioengineers Maria Chiara Carrozza (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna) and Eugenio Guglielmelli (University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome), involving political institutions – as well as academia – in support of Salvatore Cimmino’s crossing from Cuba to Florida. “Disability – said Cimmino – should not be seen as an exception of the human condition, but only a source of wealth. Disability means diversity, and diversity is an opportunity for social growth”. (Red)
