Aarhus – Occasionally, large solar storms hit the Earth, causing auroras and, in rarer cases, even power outages. However, these events are nothing compared to the apocalyptic destruction that we might experience if the Earth was hit by a superflare. A paper published in Nature Communications, researched by an international team led by Christoffer Karoff from the University of Aarhus in Denmark, and which features Antonio Frasca and Alfio Bonanno from the Catania INAF, suggests that this is a scenario that we may be forced to consider as a real possibility.
