(August 8, 2016) Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is one of the greatest Italian etchers that has ever lived. His work has influenced generations of artists all over the world since the 18th century, including Russia. Moscow dedicates an exhibition titled ‘Piranesi: before and after. Italy-Russia 18th to 21st century’. The exhibition was organised by the Italian Cultural Institute of Moscow. It will be inaugurated September 19 at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and will remain open until November 13. After 40 years since the last monographic exhibition, Russia once again explores the work of the etcher from Veneto. Many works will be exhibited for the first time. Among them will also be a work of contemporary art, as a tribute to Piranesi by the artist Valerij Košljakov. In the centre of the exhibition, curated by Federica Rossi, Semen Mikailovskij and Marina Maiskaja, is a figure of Piranesi, and his success in Russia, from the 18th century until the Soviet period. It is an important chapter in the artistic exchanges between Italy and Russia which is still not sufficiently explored. (Red)
