(September 1, 2016) Dr. Giovanni Tumolo – post doctoral researcher at ICTP, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics Abdus Salam in Trieste – won the European Meteorological Society “Young Scientist Award 2016” for his significant contributions to the field of numerical mathematics in weather forecasting ( NWP, Numerical Weather Prediction), collected in the publication: “a semi-implicit, semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin framework for adaptive numerical weather prediction” of G. Tumolo and L. Bonaventura. The work awarded with this recognition at the European level is the development and extension of the numerical wording introduced for the first time in the doctoral thesis of Dr. Tumulo, developed at the Graduate School in “Industrial and Environmental Fluid Mechanics” of the University of Trieste. The impact on the atmospheric modeling community of these innovative contributions is relevant because these constitute a unified numerical framework, accurate and efficient, allowing a seamless approach from the global modeling of large scales in the high resolution over a limited area .
