Toronto. There are ‘heat shock proteins’ in every living organisms and are also referred to as ‘stress proteins’ that are capable of slowing down the course of certain diseases. Stress activates them and increases their levels and activity. Research on the efficiency of these proteins was conducted by the winner of the ‘Giovani Ricercatori Rita Levi Montalcini’ programme, a young Italian researcher who repatriated to Italy. Professor Serena Carra from the Biomedical and Metabolic Sciences and Neuroscience Department of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia that studies the importance of these protein complexes and their possible implications in neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. The research project was launched by Carra in 2005 in Canada and focuses on sHSP proteins known as ‘heat shock proteins’. (9colonne)
