(10 January 2017) In 1926, with the enactment of the so-called “leggi fascistissime” (‘very fascist’ laws) Benito Mussolini’s regime was definitely tightening his authoritarian and dictatorial stronghold on Italian society. At the same time, there was a fervent effort to establish a branded fascist culture. The same year, the “Rivista illustrata del Popolo d’Italia” (illustrated Magazine of the People of Italy) announced the “Concorso per la mobilia di un’ambasciata” (competition to furnish an embassy) in order to encourage a new national style in furniture. The winners of this competition were two young architects, Tommaso Buzzi and Gio Ponti. A selection of original designs, conceived and organised by the Sartirana Art Foundation, will be presented from January 25 to February 23 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm attended by the president of the foundation, Giorgio Forni.
