(21 September, 2017) Thursday, October 5th, the Lincean Academy of Rome will host the first European presentation of the EST project: The European Solar Telescope. EST will be the largest European telescope dedicated to the study of the sun. The project, implemented in the ESFRI-the Strategic European Forum for Strategic Research Infrastructures, in 2016, will consist of 21 scientific and industrial institutions of 15 European countries, including Italy. The sun is the star at the centre of our solar system. The sun’s relevance in our daily lives and in the understanding physical phenomena that occur in the universe has lead the European solar astrophysics community decided to establish the EST project of creating the largest solar telescope in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The telescope will allow for the observation of the sun in such detail never achieved before and will be built in the Canary Islands, Spain. The EST presentation will lay down the framework of Italy’s participation in the project from both the scientific and industrial standpoint also through the presentation of certain high-tech SMEs involved in EST and in other major astrophysics projects. The event will especially focus on the participation of the Italian and European science community involved in the project, on leading Italian institutions in the industrial astrophysics sector, on other institutions, and the press. The presentation was organised with the support of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and the universities of Calabria, Catania, and “Tor Vergata” of Rome and SMEs involved in the project: S.R.S.
