May 2 – A dip in the Nouvelle Vague: the Bologna Film Library’s L’Immagine Ritrovata will bring to the Cannes Classics section (scheduled for May 15 to 26) the restoration of “Hiroshima mon amour “, Alain Resnais’ first feature film written by Marguerite Duras (nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay). Directed in 1959 between France and Japan, “Hiroshima mon amour ” launched Emmanuelle Riva, today rediscovered by the general public thanks to the international success of “Amour” by Michael Haneke. The restoration of the film is promoted by Argos Films, Fondation Groupama Gan pour le Cinéma, Technicolor Fondation pour le Patrimoine du Cinema Foundation and the Bologna Film Library, with the support of the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée. On another note, it is Martin Scorsese’s love for Francesco Rosi’s films that today allow the Bologna Film Library to present “Lucky Luciano.” Rosi, who like few others has been able to portray and investigate events of political and social life, received the Career Golden Lion at the latest Venice Film Festival in Venice. For the occasion, his film “Caso Mattei” was remastered in collaboration with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, Cristaldi Films and Paramount Pictures (with the support of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association). Always under the auspices of Martin Scorsese (in this case the World Cinema Foundation, which was born during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival to recover what Scorses defined as “neglected cinema”), Cannes Classics will showcase the Filipino feature film “Manila in the Claws of Light”, directed in 1975 by Lino Brocka, and a Senegalese short (in collaboration with the Institut National de l’Audiovisual), “Borom Sarret”, created in 1969 by writer and director Ousmane Sembène. The laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata will also present at Cannes Classics two other works: “Jour de fête” (1949) by Jacques Tati (restoration promoted by Les Films de Mon Oncle) and “Plein soleil” (1960) by René Clément (restoration promoted by Studio Canal).
