May 29 – The Italian documentary “Non Così Lontano” by Hervé Barmasse won the award for best mountain film at “Vertical,” the Moscow International Festival of Mountaineering and Adventure Films, held May 26-27. As reported by the film information website cinemaitaliano.info. Barmasse grew up at the foot of the Matterhorn and has climbed in many regions of the world, including the Alps, Pakistan and Patagonia. The film tells the story of three adventures, and the distance and spirit that accompanies them: the left pinnacle of the Brouillard, the southeast wall of the Signalkuppe Picco Muzio and the Matterhorn, where Hervé tackles by himself big risks and difficulties. The trilogy is a tribute to great mountains and to the inexhaustible spirit of classic mountaineering; as A. F. Mummery wrote, “a true mountaineer is the man who tries new climbs. No matter whether he succeeds or not, he derives his pleasure from his imagination and the struggle game.”
