June 13 – His design works are in the permanent collection of the MOMA in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museum die Neue Sammlung in Munich and many other museums in North America and Europe. Ludovico Magistretti, better known as Vico, passed away in 2006 but his creativity continues to linger in the air. The Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles has decided to pay homage to the great Milanese architect and designer with an exhibition, organized in conjunction with the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles and the Vico Magistretti Museum Foundation. “A Traveling Archive” explores Magistretti’s creative path and his professional and personal relationships through his sketches, photographs, notes, letters and faxes, along with a selection of his most important creations, including: the prototypes of Selene and Gaudi chairs, the Vidun and Caori tables, the Maralunga, Veranda and Pillow sofas, the Pollack, Selene, Maui, Silver, and Gaudi chairs, the Eclipse, Chimera, Dalu, and Atollo lamps, the Red Cloud library, the India and Andrew De Padova beds, the Eclisse lamp, a series of lamps by Artemide produced by Oluce, a sofa and a library in Nuvola Rossa di Cassina, a Gavina Caori coffee table and some Flou bed models. In addition, the IIC “recreated” Magistretti’s working space in Milan. “A Traveling Archive” is curated by Rosanna Pavoni (director of the Vico Magistretti Museum Foundation) and architect Ilaria Mazzoleni. The exhibit includes a 40-minute interview, in Italian with English subtitles, in which Magistretti discusses his theories on design.
