July 30 – A Florentine researcher has been awarded one of twenty international awards funded by the phytopharmaceutical company Bionorica. Maria Camilla Bergonzi, of the Chemistry Department “Ugo Schiff” at the University of Florence, will develop a project to improve the effectiveness of some herbal remedies. In particular – as stated on the website of the Tuscan university – the research will focus on natural substances already tested for their harmlessness, especially plant extracts, and will develop new formulations for oral administration that can enhance the effectiveness of these products. By applying to natural products the principles and cutting-edge methodologies used in the pharmaceutical field, it is possible to improve bioavailability, that is to say the human body’s absorption capacity of herbal medicines, and therefore increase the potential benefits. The award ceremony took place on Sunday July 27 in Majorca.
