Los Angeles – For the international “Conference on Decision and Control,” held in Los Angeles in recent days, Lorenzo Marconi and Roberto Naldi of the “Guglielmo Marconi” Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of Energy of the University of Bologna received the “2014 IEEE Control Systems Magazine Outstanding Paper Award” for the best paper published in 2012-2013 on Control Systems Magazine. Their work, entitled “Control of Aerial Robots: Hybrid Force and Position Feedback for a Ducted Fan,” focuses on unmanned aircraft, or drones. Their research presents the results of the European AIRobots and Sherpa projects, in which Marconi and Naldi studied the behavior of the aircraft in physical contact with the surrounding environment, leading the two to suggest automatic control algorithms that allow precise positioning and simultaneous application of a certain contact force.
