Port au Prince – It’s been five years since an earthquake shook Haiti to the core in 12 January 2010; it’s been almost three months since the inauguration in Port au Prince of the “Village Haitien Solferino”, a settlement of 53 houses for homeless families. This is the largest Italian Red Cross project in recent years, established with its Haitian counterpart. The village delivered houses to the families that were in the mean time hosted in Italy; the village was built at the same time as a new industrial center for the creation of jobs, a nutrition center and a “downtown district” (a school, a library room, a computer room, a cultural center, an amphitheater and sports fields). The Italian Red Cross, in collaboration with the Haitian Red Cross, funded various income-generating activities, such as opening a bakery and a pasta factory in Croix de Bouquets, and training courses for local workers.
