Feb. 20 – A brief research period on the treatment of cancer in one of the most important oncology research and development centers in the world. Caterina Merla, an Enea researcher of the Technical Unit of Biological Radiation and Human Health directed by Carmela Marino located in Casaccia, won the EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Call of the Horizon 2020 Program. Thanks to the Call, the Italian researcher will work at the University Paris Sud CNRS Institute Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, directed by Lluis M. Mir. Her research project “Toward the comprehension of primary bioelectromagnetic interactions: real time non-linear Optical imaging of bio-samples under ElectroMagnetic exposure (Optic Bioem)” will last two years and allow her to develop a fruitful collaboration with Enea’s Technical Unit of Biological Radiation and Human Health. The research project uses engineering knowledge and methodologies, applied to the field of medicine. Its ultimate goal is to study new and more effective methods to treat oncological diseases, defining precisely therapy efficiency and protocols. To achieve these objectives, the project involves the construction of an integrated electro-optical device, an application of a series of electromagnetic pulses that can act on cancer cells, increasing the ability to absorb drugs.
