Chicago – A group of doctoral candidates of the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics (Percro) of the Tecip Institute (Communication Technologies, Information, Perception) at Sant’Anna of Pisa developed a very special app. The product can held visually impared people take pictures or self-portraits with a Tpad Phone, a smartphone with a haptic screen that provides tactile sensations to the user at the moment of interaction. The Tpad Phone was the star of the “Student Innovation Challenge”, a competition held in Chicago a few days ago at the international conference “IEEE Worldhaptics 2015”.Using a smartphone with a haptic screen , the group of doctoral students in “Digital emerging technology” developed the app “Tactile blind photography” that guides the visually impaired in taking pictures. “Centering” the object isn’t an easy task for all, and the Sant’Anna app uses both audio and tactile feedback to automatically detect the faces on the scene and helps users identify the best pose.
